Maine Permit Practice Test
Maine asks for 70 hours, not 50
Most states settle on 50 hours of supervised driving before the road test. Maine wants 70 hours, including 10 at night, and it is one of the highest requirements in the country.
That is not bureaucracy for its own sake. Maine driving includes narrow coastal roads with no shoulder, long rural stretches with moose on them, and winters that turn familiar roads into something else entirely. Seventy hours is roughly what it takes to see most of that at least once.
What the real Maine test looks like
- Questions: 30 multiple choice
- Passing score: 24 correct, or 80%
- Minimum age: 15
- Driver education: required if you are under 18
- Permit validity: two years
- Source material: the official Maine Motorist Handbook
In Maine the agency is the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, so you will see BMV rather than DMV throughout the paperwork. Maine also calls impaired driving OUI, Operating Under the Influence, rather than DUI or DWI. The rules are the same; the name is not.
Moose are a different problem to deer
Maine has one of the largest moose populations in the lower forty-eight, concentrated north of Portland and Bangor. The handbook covers them for a reason.
A moose stands well above hood height and its coat is dark, which means headlights often do not pick up the body at all until you are close. In a collision the legs give way and the body comes through the windshield rather than over the hood. That is why the advice is brake hard and stay in your lane rather than swerve. They move most at dawn and dusk, and most often in late spring and autumn.
Coastal roads and winter
Away from the interstate, Maine roads are narrow, winding and often shoulderless, with stone walls and trees close to the edge. There is frequently nowhere to go if something appears in your lane, which makes speed for the conditions a practical matter rather than a legal abstraction.
Winter adds black ice on bridges and shaded curves, frost heaves that buckle the surface in spring, and salt spray that ruins visibility on a clear cold day. Coastal fog can drop visibility to almost nothing in minutes.
After you pass
Drivers under 21 hold the permit at least six months before the road test. If you are 21 or over it is three months. The intermediate license comes at 16, and its restrictions end when you turn 18 or after 270 days without violations, whichever comes first.
