New Mexico practice tests

Permits at 15, valid for four years, and driver education required before you can even apply. You may retake the knowledge test the same day — but fail three times and you wait six months. Free practice questions from the official New Mexico Driver Manual.

You can retake it the same day — twice a week, and no more

New Mexico’s retake rule is unusually generous at the start and unusually harsh at the end. The MVD states it plainly:

Situation Rule
Fail the knowledge test Retake as soon as you want, even the same day
In any single week No more than twice
Fail three times Wait six months from the date of application
That third line is the one to respect. Two attempts in a week is not much room, and a third failure costs half a year. Practicing properly is cheaper than finding out.

Four years is the longest permit we have found

The MVD issues all new and renewal instruction permits for a four-year period. The exceptions are a shorter term required by a medical report, or the applicant turning 21 in less than four years.

For comparison, Colorado issues three years, Montana and Massachusetts two, and Vermont two. Four gives you real breathing room.

Your supervising driver needs three years of license, not just age

A New Mexico permit holder may drive when accompanied by a licensed driver who is 21 or older, who has been licensed for at least three years in this state or another, and who is occupying the seat beside the driver.

Most states stop at the age. New Mexico adds the experience requirement, so a 22-year-old licensed last year does not qualify. A motorcycle permit holder may not carry any passenger at all.

Driver education comes before the permit, not after

This is the part that catches people used to other states. You must be enrolled in or have completed a driver education course approved by the Traffic Safety Bureau before you can apply for the instruction permit. The course must include a DWI prevention and education component, which the MVD describes as a three-hour element.

You bring either a Driver Education Referral Card or a Certificate of Completion to the field office.

Driver education schools cannot issue permits. An MVD-contracted driving school may administer the knowledge exam, but only the Motor Vehicle Division issues new or renewal instruction permits. You go to a field office either way.

The three GDL stages

Stage Requirement
Instructional permit From 15, with driver education enrolled or completed
Provisional license Hold the permit 6 months, log the required hours, pass the road test
Full unrestricted license Hold the provisional 12 months and be at least 16½

Once the provisional license is issued:

  • No more than one passenger under 21 who is not an immediate family member, unless a licensed driver 21 or older is in the vehicle
  • No driving between midnight and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed driver 21 or older
  • Exceptions exist for school, employment, family and medical need, or religious functions — but you must carry a statement from the school, religious official, employer, doctor or parent

That written statement is the detail people forget. The exception does not apply just because the reason is true; you have to be carrying the paper.

Moving here with a license already

New Mexico treats incoming drivers unusually. Someone arriving with a regular, unrestricted license from another state must still provide a course certificate or transcript with 30/6 verification in order to get a New Mexico Class D license.

Out-of-state permit holders fare better: six months on an equivalent permit, 50 hours logged and a passed road test makes you eligible for a provisional license. A year on an equivalent provisional plus age 16½ opens the Class D.

What the MVD does not publish

New Mexico documents its licensing rules chapter by chapter in real detail. What we could not find on any MVD page is how many questions the knowledge exam has, or what score passes it.

Study sites disagree sharply here: some say 25 questions with 18 to pass, others 25 with a 70% mark, and at least one says 50 questions with 35 to pass. Those cannot all be right, and none traces to the MVD, so our practice test uses its own format and says so.

Testing in another state?

The variation is wide. Arizona publishes both numbers and lets teens test at home, Colorado fingerprints applicants and publishes neither, and Utah adds a second exam nobody mentions. Compare them on our states page.
