Montana permit practice tests
Free practice questions written from the official Montana Driver Manual, scored at the real 82% threshold. Mountain passes, open range and winter survival included, because the exam includes them.
Start the permit testThree attempts a year, and that is the whole story
Almost every state lets you retake the knowledge test as often as you like. Montana allows three attempts within any twelve-month period. Fail three times and you are out until the clock resets.
Each retake also needs a 24-hour wait and carries a fee. That combination makes Montana the state where walking in underprepared costs you most, and it is the reason to keep practicing until you are consistently above 90% rather than scraping 82% once.
Montana uses numbers nobody else uses
33 questions, 27 to pass. That is 82%, not the 80% almost every other state settles on. It is a small difference that changes your margin: six misses rather than the seven an 80% bar on 33 questions would give you.
Your starting age depends on driver education
| Age | Requirement | Supervision |
|---|---|---|
| 14½ | Enrolled in an approved traffic education program | Parent or legal guardian in the front seat |
| 15 | Completed an approved traffic education program | Any approved licensed driver over 18 |
| 16 | No driver education required | Any approved licensed driver over 18 |
The 14 and a half permit comes from your driving instructor rather than the MVD, and it is the stricter one on supervision. Two teenagers of the same age can be at completely different stages depending on whether they took the course.
The fourth largest state, with barely a million people
That combination produces hazards you will not find on an east coast exam, and the Montana manual takes them seriously.
- Open range. Livestock are legally entitled to be on the road in designated areas and are not fenced out. The sign is a real warning.
- Wildlife. Deer, elk and moose in numbers, plus bison near Yellowstone. An elk is tall enough that the body comes through the windshield rather than over the hood.
- Mountain passes. Long grades needing a lower gear, chain requirements in winter, and closures during storms.
- Distance. A breakdown can leave you a long way from help with no phone signal. Cold here is a survival problem, not an inconvenience.
- Gravel roads. Traction and steering both get worse, and shoulders can be soft.

Formats vary widely. Idaho demands 85% across 40 questions, Wyoming uses 25 at 80%, and Vermont only 20. Compare them all on our states page.
