Ten of the thirty questions are signs

This is the most useful fact about the Delaware exam and it changes how you should study. A third of your marks come from road signs, which is the most learnable section on the whole test because the shape and color system is logical rather than memorization.

Get all ten and you need only 14 of the remaining 20 to pass. Drop five of them and you are in trouble before you reach a single road rule. Study signs first, not last.

Delaware starts a year later than its neighbors

The minimum age for a Level One Learner’s Permit is 16. Several nearby states issue permits at 15, so teenagers who have watched friends across a state line get theirs earlier are often surprised.

Applicants under 18 must complete a certified Delaware driver education course before applying, need a parent or guardian present to sign, and must log 50 hours of supervised driving including 10 at night before the road test. You cannot apply for a first permit online.

Failing costs you more here

Most states let you come back the next business day. Delaware is commonly reported to make you wait ten days before retaking the knowledge test.

Confirm the current rule at your office, but plan on the assumption that a failure costs a week and a half rather than a day. It is a good argument for being genuinely ready instead of optimistic. Aim for 90% or better in practice.

Three things to confirm directly with the Delaware DMV: the current permit fee, the minimum age of your supervising driver, and how long you must hold the permit before the road test. Published sources genuinely disagree on all three, and we would rather tell you that than pick a number and sound confident. Everything else on this page is consistent across sources.

Three kinds of driving in one small state

Delaware is under a hundred miles top to bottom, but the driving changes completely as you go.

  • The north. Wilmington city traffic and the I-95 corridor, one of the busiest stretches on the east coast. Heavy merging, tight interchanges, constant lane changes.
  • The south. Sussex County farm roads with slow-moving agricultural equipment displaying orange triangles. Closing speed catches people out.
  • The coast. Route 1 to Rehoboth and Dewey becomes a summer queue, with heavy pedestrian and cyclist traffic in the beach towns.

The exam leans on merging, following distance, passing and right of way for exactly this reason.

Testing in another state?

The format varies more than people expect. Wyoming uses 25 questions and issues permits at 15. Vermont uses only 20, which sounds easier but means you can miss just four.
