Nebraska permit practice tests
Free practice questions written from the official Nebraska Driver’s Manual, covering I-80 truck traffic, gravel roads and the winter driving the real exam tests. No sign-up, unlimited retakes.
Start the permit testNebraska has five permits, and the names confuse everyone
Most states have one learner permit. Nebraska has several, and picking the right one changes when you can start.
| Permit | From | What it allows |
|---|---|---|
| LPE, School Learner’s Permit | 14 | Supervised practice toward a School Permit |
| SCP, School Permit | 14 yrs 2 mo | Unsupervised driving to and from school, rural applicants only |
| LPD, Learner’s Permit | 15 | Supervised practice, the standard route |
| POP, Provisional Operator’s Permit | 16 | Unsupervised 6 a.m. to midnight, with passenger limits |
| Operator’s License | 17 | Full unrestricted driving |
All of them sit on the same 25-question knowledge test, so the studying does not change. Only the paperwork does.
A fourteen-year-old can drive to school alone here
The School Permit is genuinely unusual. If you live outside a city of 5,000 or more, or attend school outside one, you can hold an SCP from 14 years and 2 months and drive yourself to and from school without an adult in the car.
The reasoning is rural. Across much of Nebraska the nearest high school is a serious drive and there is no bus network to fall back on. Outside those school trips, an SCP holder still needs a licensed driver aged 21 or over beside them.
Your supervising driver must be 21
Not 18, not “any licensed adult”. Nebraska requires a licensed driver aged 21 or over in the passenger seat while you hold a learner permit. An older sibling who just turned 19 does not qualify, and this comes up on the exam.
Two very different kinds of driving
Interstate 80 runs the length of the state and carries a huge volume of long-haul freight across the country. For a new driver that means learning to share the road with heavy trucks at speed: staying out of blind spots, understanding that a loaded truck needs far more room to stop, and merging properly rather than hoping.
Away from the interstate everything flips. Gravel county roads where traction and steering both get worse, slow-moving farm equipment during planting and harvest, deer at dawn and dusk, and long empty stretches where drowsiness becomes the real hazard.
Winter adds ground blizzards, where wind lifts fallen snow and removes visibility on an otherwise clear day. The sky can be blue and the road can disappear.
If you fail
You can retake the knowledge test the following day. Use the gap to work through the specific questions you missed rather than retaking blindly. Our test lists every question you got wrong with the reasoning, which makes that straightforward.
Testing in another state?
Formats vary more than people expect. Idaho demands 85% across 40 questions, Delaware uses 30, and Vermont only 20. Compare them all on our states page.
