Start the full testWyoming does things a little differently
Three things surprise people about getting a permit in Wyoming.
First, there is no DMV here. Driver licensing runs through the Wyoming Department of Transportation, usually written WYDOT, and its Driver Services offices. Searching for a Wyoming DMV will still get you there, but the agency name on the paperwork is WYDOT.
Second, the knowledge test cannot be taken online. Some states now let you sit the written test at home under supervision. Wyoming does not. You take it in person at a Driver Services office, along with a vision screening.
Third, the instruction permit is valid for four years, which is the longest of any state in the country. That is generous, but it is not a reason to drift. Teen drivers still need to log their supervised hours and move on to the road test.
How to get a Wyoming instruction permit
- Turn 15. That is the minimum age for a standard instruction permit.
- Read the Wyoming Driver License Manual. Every question on the test comes from it. It is free on the WYDOT website.
- Practice until you are consistently above 90%. Practice scores run higher than real ones, so leave yourself a margin.
- Gather your documents. Proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number, and two documents proving Wyoming residency. Under 18 also needs a parent or guardian signature.
- Visit a WYDOT Driver Services office. You will take the vision screening and the 25-question knowledge test there. Results come back immediately.
- Start logging hours. Teen drivers need at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night, before the road skills test.
What the knowledge test covers
All 25 questions come from the Wyoming Driver License Manual. In practice they cluster around traffic laws and right of way, road signs and pavement markings, speed limits and stopping distances, alcohol and drug law including the state’s zero-tolerance rule for drivers under 21, and safe driving practice.
Winter driving deserves more attention here than in most states. High wind and blowing snow shut Wyoming interstates regularly, and questions on reduced visibility, black ice and stopping distance turn up often enough to matter.
If you fail
You can retake it. Wyoming does not cap attempts, though you will usually be asked to come back on a later business day. The useful thing to do in between is not to retake blindly but to work through the specific questions you missed and read those manual sections again.
Our tests show you every question you got wrong at the end of an attempt, with the answer and the reasoning, which makes that review straightforward.
Testing in another state?
Rules differ more than people expect. If you are testing in Vermont, the exam is 20 questions rather than 25 and the rural driving section is heavier.
