Pass The Permit exists for one reason: getting a learner permit in the United States is harder than it needs to be, and the study material available online is often worse than useless.
The problem we set out to fix
Search for a permit practice test and you will find plenty of sites. Most of them share the same problems. They want your email before they show you anything. They hide the good questions behind a payment wall. They give you a score but never explain why an answer was wrong, which is the only part that actually teaches you something. And many of them recycle the same generic questions across all fifty states, ignoring the fact that the rules genuinely differ from Wyoming to Florida.
We built the site we wanted to use: free, no account, no paywall, and an explanation after every single question.
How we write our questions
Every question on this site is written from scratch by us, working from the official driver manual published by the relevant state agency. We read the manual, identify what the knowledge test actually covers, and write questions that test the same understanding in the same format.
We do not copy questions from other websites and we have no access to any state question bank. What we produce is practice material, and we say so plainly on every page.
Where a fact is state-specific, such as the number of questions, the passing score, or the minimum age, we check it against current official sources before we publish it. Where a rule is general road law that applies everywhere, we say so.
What we believe about studying
A practice test is not a substitute for the driver manual. It is a tool for finding the gaps in what you already know. That is why our explanations matter more than our scores, and why we show you every question you missed at the end of a test rather than just a number.
Our advice is always the same: read your state manual properly, use our tests to find your weak spots, then go back to the manual for those topics. People who do this pass. People who only take practice tests until the number looks good often do not.
Keeping things correct
Driving law changes. Fees change. Procedures change. We review our state pages regularly, but we are a small operation and we will sometimes be behind.

Who runs this site
My name is Nikhil Kalia and I build websites for a living.
I am not a driving instructor and I have never worked for a licensing agency. I want to be upfront about that, because plenty of study sites imply an authority they do not have.
What I do is simpler. I read a state’s official driver manual, work out what its knowledge test actually covers, and write practice questions from it. Where a fact is state-specific, such as the number of questions, the passing score, or the minimum age, I check it against the state agency’s own published information before it goes on the site. Where a rule is general road law that applies everywhere, I say so.
The manual is the authority here, not me. My job is to turn it into something you can practice with, and to explain every answer so you learn the rule rather than memorising a letter.
