Three ways to fail without getting a question wrong

Massachusetts lets you take the real permit exam online, at home, within 60 days of your Service Center visit. What the RMV also publishes, and what almost no study site repeats, is that the system fails you automatically for three things that have nothing to do with your answers.

Trigger What it means
Inactivity You have not clicked a button on a question for more than 2 minutes
Time Out You take longer than 25 minutes to complete the exam
Lost Focus You leave the browser during the exam
All three count as an automatic failure. You can take the exam again, but you must go to your myRMV profile and pay another $30 first. Sitting and thinking hard about a question for two minutes is enough to end the attempt.

Lost Focus is the one that catches people. Checking a message, opening another tab, or clicking away to look something up ends the exam. If you are the sort of person who alt-tabs without thinking, take the exam at a Service Center instead.

Cheating costs you 60 days of eligibility

The penalty is heavier than a simple fail. Get caught cheating or attempting to cheat and you cannot hold any type of driver’s license or permit for 60 days, with further investigation possible.

The RMV is explicit that cheating includes having someone else take the exam for you and using the Driver’s Manual or other reference materials during the test. The manual sitting open beside your laptop counts.

At 72%, Massachusetts has one of the gentler pass marks in the country. Seven wrong answers are survivable. The clock and the automatic failures are what make it harder than the number suggests.

Topics the RMV lists: rules of the road, identifying road signs, alcohol misuse, suspensions, Junior Operator License violations, sharing the road with the visually impaired, and sharing the road with bicyclists and pedestrians.

Taking it online

You must still visit a Service Center first to have your documents reviewed, take the vision exam and have your photo taken. Only then can you sit the exam remotely, and only within 60 days.

  • A computer with a working camera, enabled throughout
  • No smartphone or tablet
  • Chrome 97, Edge 94 or Internet Explorer 11 as a minimum browser
  • You must consent to your photo being taken before, during and at the end of the exam

If your computer does not meet those requirements, or you would rather not be photographed throughout, take it at a Service Center. Only Class D and Class M exams can be taken online; commercial permit exams cannot.

Getting the permit

  • Minimum age 16, with a parent or legal guardian signature if you are under 18
  • You must start the application online and book an appointment at a Service Center, or an AAA location if you are a member
  • The permit is valid for 2 years, or the length of your legal stay in the US, whichever is shorter
  • Anyone between 16 and a half and 18 is a Junior Operator, with its own restrictions
  • Driver education is required for all Class D and M applicants under 18 before the road test

American Sign Language versions of the exam can only be taken at a Service Center, and the RMV asks ASL applicants to self-schedule no later than 2:30 p.m.

Testing in another state?

New England varies more than you would expect. Connecticut makes you wait seven days and pay $40 again if you fail, Vermont asks 20 questions and starts at 15, New Hampshire has no learner permit at all, and Rhode Island publishes no exam format. Compare them on our states page.
