The Massachusetts learner’s permit exam is 25 questions, you need 18 correct, and you have 25 minutes. At 72 percent it is one of the gentler pass marks in the country.
What makes it harder than that sounds: the online version fails you automatically for three things that have nothing to do with your answers, and each retake costs another $30.
This practice test uses the same 25 questions and 18 to pass, with an explanation after every answer.
Massachusetts Practice Test
Three ways to fail without answering anything wrong
Massachusetts lets you sit the real exam online within 60 days of your Service Center visit. The RMV also publishes three system rules that end the attempt regardless of how well you are doing.
| Trigger | What it means |
|---|---|
| Inactivity | No button clicked on a question for more than 2 minutes |
| Time Out | Longer than 25 minutes to finish |
| Lost Focus | You leave the browser during the exam |
After any of the three you can retake, but you must pay another $30 through myRMV first.
Cheating costs 60 days of eligibility
Not just a fail. Get caught cheating or attempting to cheat and you cannot hold any type of driver’s license or permit for 60 days, with further investigation possible. The RMV states that cheating includes having someone else take the exam and using the Driver’s Manual or other reference materials during the test.
Taking it online
- A computer with a working camera, enabled throughout — no smartphone or tablet
- Chrome 97, Edge 94 or Internet Explorer 11 as a minimum
- Consent to your photo being taken before, during and at the end
- Only Class D and Class M exams can be taken online
You still visit a Service Center first so the RMV can review your documents, run the vision exam and take your photo. The ASL version of the exam is Service Center only, self-scheduled no later than 2:30 p.m.
Midnight, not 12:30
The 12:30 a.m. figure you will see quoted belongs to the Junior Operator License, which comes after the permit. They are two different rules for two different stages, and plenty of guides run them together.
Your supervising driver must be licensed, at least 21, with at least one year of driving experience, sitting beside you. Carry the permit while driving, and do not operate in another state if it would break that state’s law. A Class M permit holder may carry no passengers and may not ride after sunset or before sunrise.
Getting from permit to license
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Hold the permit | 6 consecutive months before the road test |
| Clean record | 6 consecutive months |
| Classroom instruction | 30 hours |
| On-road instruction | 18 hours: minimum 12 behind the wheel plus 6 observing |
| Supervised driving | At least 40 additional hours, certified by a parent or guardian |
| With a skills development program | 30 hours accepted instead |
| Parent or guardian | 2 hours of instruction, unless completed within the past 5 years |
Testing in another state?
New England varies more than you would expect. Connecticut makes you wait seven days and pay $40 again if you fail, Vermont asks 20 questions and starts at 15, New Hampshire has no learner permit at all, and Rhode Island publishes no exam format at all. Compare them on our states page, or read more on the Massachusetts hub.
