Wyoming Road Signs Test 2026 – Free Practice Quiz

Road signs are one of the biggest sections of the Wyoming knowledge test, and they are also where careless mistakes cost people a pass. This free signs quiz gives you 20 questions drawn at random from our Wyoming sign bank, with an explanation after every answer. You need 16 correct to hit the 80% standard the real test uses.

Our questions describe signs in words rather than showing pictures. That is deliberate: if you can identify a sign from its shape, color and meaning without seeing it, you understand the system rather than having memorised a picture.

Shapes tell you the message before you can read it

Sign shapes in the United States are standardised so that a driver can recognise a sign at distance, at night, or when it is partly covered by snow. Learn these and a large chunk of the sign section answers itself.

  • Octagon (eight sides): stop. Nothing else uses this shape.
  • Upside-down triangle: yield.
  • Diamond: warning about conditions ahead.
  • Pentagon (five sides): school zone or school crossing.
  • Round: railroad crossing ahead.
  • Crossbuck (X shape): you are at the railroad crossing itself.
  • Pennant (sideways triangle, on the left of the road): no passing zone.
  • Vertical rectangle: a regulation you must obey.
  • Horizontal rectangle: guidance, directions, distances.

Colours tell you what kind of message it is

  • Red: stop, yield, or something prohibited.
  • Yellow: general warning about the road ahead.
  • Orange: construction and maintenance work.
  • Fluorescent yellow-green: pedestrian, bicycle and school warnings.
  • Green: guidance, permitted movements, distances and directions.
  • Blue: motorist services such as fuel, food, lodging and hospitals.
  • Brown: parks, recreation areas and places of cultural interest.
  • White with black lettering: a traffic law you must obey.

Why signs trip people up in Wyoming

Two mistakes come up again and again. The first is confusing yellow and orange. Yellow warns you about the road itself, such as a curve, a hill or an animal crossing. Orange means people are working, which is a different kind of hazard and usually carries higher penalties for speeding.

The second is treating a yellow advisory speed as optional. A speed shown on a yellow plate under a curve warning is not the legal limit, but ignoring it in ice, wind or loaded conditions is exactly how vehicles end up off the road. In Wyoming, where crosswinds and black ice are routine, advisory speeds are worth taking seriously.

Frequently asked questions

How many sign questions are on the real Wyoming test?

Wyoming does not publish a fixed breakdown. The knowledge test has 25 questions in total covering signs, pavement markings, traffic laws and safe driving, so signs make up a meaningful share but not the whole exam.

Is this quiz timed?

No. Wyoming does not impose a formal time limit on the knowledge test either, so take as long as you need to think each answer through.

Do I need to memorise every sign?

No, and trying to is the slow way. Learn the shape and color system above and you can work out the meaning of signs you have never seen before, which is exactly what the test is checking.
