Rhode Island Permit Test Questions and Answers 2026

People do not only look for practice tests. They type the actual question into Google, word for word. This page answers those questions directly, from the official Rhode Island Driver’s Manual and the DMV.

Rhode Island is unusual in that several of the most-asked questions have no official answer at all. Where that is the case we say so, rather than repeating a figure from another study site as though it were fact.

The test itself

How many questions are on the Rhode Island permit test?

Rhode Island does not publish a question count. The DMV describes a computerized knowledge exam drawn from the Driver’s Manual and says nothing about its length.

Search around and you will find 25 questions, 40 questions and 50 questions each stated confidently. They cannot all be right. Our practice test uses 30 questions scored at 80 percent, and we label that as our format rather than the state’s.

What score do you need to pass the Rhode Island permit test?

Also not published. You will see 70 percent, 80 percent and 85 percent quoted. None of them traces back to the DMV. Study to be comfortably above any plausible threshold rather than aiming at a number nobody can source.

How long do you have to wait to retake the Rhode Island permit test?

At least eight days. This is the one exam number that is certain, and it matters more than the ones that are missing. Most states let you return the next business day. Turning up underprepared in Rhode Island costs you over a week.

Where do you take the Rhode Island permit test?

DMV headquarters at 600 New London Avenue, Cranston — the only testing location in the state. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., by reservation only. The vision test happens at the same appointment, and there is no branch office alternative.

One exception: students who completed driver education through the Community College of Rhode Island may schedule at the college instead.

What languages is the Rhode Island permit test available in?

English, Spanish and Portuguese on the computer. Other languages are available as a printed exam, booked in advance through a separate form, and you must bring someone who can translate for you before and after the test. Arrive an hour early, and only the applicant enters the exam room.

Driver education

How old do you have to be to get a permit in Rhode Island?

16. That is older than most states, several of which start at 14 or 15. You can begin the classroom course at 15 years and 10 months, but the permit waits until your 16th birthday.

How many hours of driver education does Rhode Island require?

33 classroom hours for every applicant under 18, certified through CCRI.

Does Rhode Island accept online driver education?

No. It has not been accepted since 1 July 2022, and it is not an approved curriculum in Rhode Island at all. An online certificate buys you nothing here, whatever the course provider advertises.

Which driving schools can teach the Rhode Island course?

Only five are authorized statewide: AAA in Providence, CCRI in Lincoln, The MET Driving School in Providence, Newport County Driving School in Tiverton, and Labonte’s Auto School, which is actually in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Places fill up, so book early.

Can you bring a photocopy of the driver education certificate?

No, the original is required. A parent, legal guardian, licensed foster parent or adult spouse must also attend to sign the application and show identification, or have their signature notarized on the LI-1 form.

The three stages

How long is a Rhode Island learner permit valid?

One year, or until you turn 18, whichever is greater, and it is renewable once. The Limited Instruction Permit is issued from age 16.

How long must you hold the permit before the road test?

Six months. You may book the road test appointment as soon as the permit is issued, though, which is worth doing straight away because waiting lists are long.

How many hours of supervised driving does Rhode Island require?

50 hours, with 10 of them at night, confirmed by a parent-signed affidavit. You also need six months on the permit, a passed road test, and no motor vehicle conviction in that period.

What hours can a Rhode Island provisional license holder drive?

Unsupervised from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. That 1 a.m. cut-off is later than most states allow teens. There are three exceptions that let you drive outside those hours:

  • To or from work
  • To or from an activity of a volunteer fire department, rescue squad or emergency medical service, if you are a member
  • Between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., traveling between home and a school-sponsored athletic activity for which the school provides no transport

With a supervising driver beside you in the front seat, you may drive at any hour.

Can a Rhode Island provisional license holder carry passengers?

For the first twelve months, no more than one passenger under 21, with immediate family and household members excepted.

When does a Rhode Island provisional license become a full one?

Automatically when it expires on your 18th birthday. You can get there sooner if you are at least 17, have held the provisional license for 12 months, and have no motor vehicle conviction in the preceding six months.

Adults

Can you drive alone on a permit in Rhode Island?

Yes, if you are 18 or over. This is genuinely rare. Almost everywhere else a permit means a licensed adult in the passenger seat at all times. It applies only to adults, never to anyone under 18.

Do adults need driver education in Rhode Island?

No. If you are 18 or over and have never held a Rhode Island license, you take the knowledge exam at Cranston with no course required. The road test comes after 30 days with the permit, rather than the six months teens wait.

Driving in Rhode Island

How do you drive a rotary in Rhode Island?

Yield to traffic already circulating, hold your lane, and signal your exit rather than your entry. Rotaries are a New England fixture and the rule is the ordinary roundabout rule.

What should you do on the Rhode Island bay bridges?

Ease off and take a firm two-handed grip. Crosswinds hit hardest as you leave the shelter of the approach. In winter the bridges ice over while the road at either end is merely wet.

Should you use high beams in coastal fog?

No, use low beams. High beams reflect off the fog straight back at you and make visibility worse. Coastal fog arrives quickly here.

Where to go next

If you came for one answer, you have it. If you are studying, the eight-day retake wait makes preparation worth more here than almost anywhere. Work through the full Rhode Island practice test, bank the easy marks with the signs and markings test, and see the whole process including the five approved driving schools on the Rhode Island permit guide.
