You may not have to take this test at all

This is the single most useful thing to know before you start studying, and most riders find out too late.

WYDOT runs a Basic Rider Course that combines classroom work with on-cycle training. Complete it and you receive a course completion card. Present that card at Wyoming Driver Services and it waives both the written knowledge test and the on-cycle skills test.

The course costs money and takes a weekend, so it is not free. But you get real coached riding time, you skip both exams, and you do not have to supply your own motorcycle for a skills test. For a new rider that is usually the better path. For an experienced rider who just moved to Wyoming, taking the written test is probably quicker.

Either way, the manual still matters. The Wyoming Motorcycle Operator Manual is what keeps you alive on a road, not just what gets you through an exam. Read it even if you take the course.

The motorcycle instruction permit

If you want to practice before the skills test, you can get a motorcycle instruction permit after passing the knowledge test. It comes with real limits that surprise people.

  • The permit is valid for 90 days, not years. Plan your skills test before it runs out.
  • Riders under 17 face night riding restrictions and must be supervised during those hours.
  • You supply your own motorcycle for the skills test. WYDOT does not provide one, and it must be registered, insured and roadworthy with working mirrors, signals and brake lights.

What the knowledge test covers

About half the questions are ordinary road rules: right of way, signs, speed, alcohol law. If you already hold a Wyoming driver license you have seen these before, but do not assume you will remember them. People fail this test on the car half more often than the bike half.

The rest is motorcycle specific: protective gear, lane positioning, braking with both brakes, countersteering, cornering, group riding, carrying passengers and cargo, surface hazards, and riding at night or in bad weather.

For the road rules half, work through the Wyoming permit practice test and the cheat sheet alongside this one.

Riding in Wyoming is its own problem

Wyoming is one of the best states in the country to ride and one of the least forgiving. Crosswinds on I-80 and I-25 regularly exceed 60 mph, which will move a motorcycle across a lane before you have decided what to do about it. Long empty stretches mean a breakdown or a crash can go unnoticed for a while. Wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk is routine rather than unusual, and a deer strike on two wheels is a different event to a deer strike in a car.

None of that is on the test in those words, but the wind, surface and hazard questions exist for a reason. Take them seriously.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions is the Wyoming motorcycle test?

25 multiple choice questions. You need 20 correct, which is 80%.

Do I need a car license first?

No, but the process differs depending on whether you are adding an endorsement to an existing license or applying as a new driver. Check the current requirements with WYDOT Driver Services before you go.

Are helmets required in Wyoming?

Wyoming requires helmets for riders and passengers under 18. Adults are not legally required to wear one, which does not make it a good idea. Eye protection and a face shield are strongly recommended at any age.

Can I retake the test if I fail?

Yes. Wyoming does not cap attempts, though you will usually be asked to return on a later business day.
