Free Idaho Permit Practice Test 2026 – 40 Questions, 85% to Pass

Idaho has the hardest permit test in the country. Not because the questions are harder, but because the bar is higher: 40 questions and you need 34 correct, which is 85%. Almost every other state passes you at 80%. You can miss six and no more.

This free practice test pulls 40 questions at random from our Idaho bank, explains every answer as you go, and lists what you missed at the end. We score it at 34 so you know where you actually stand.

40 questions · 34 correct to pass · 85%, the highest in the US · No sign-up

The 85% threshold is the whole story

Most states let you miss a fifth of the exam. Idaho lets you miss 15% of it. That sounds like a small difference until you sit down: six wrong answers out of forty, and two careless mistakes have already used a third of your margin.

It shows in the results. Published figures suggest roughly a third of Idaho applicants fail on their first attempt. If you are used to hearing that permit tests are easy, that number is worth sitting with.

The test is adaptive. Idaho stops the exam as soon as the outcome is decided. Reach 34 correct and it ends there and you have passed, even if you have not seen all 40 questions. Reach 7 wrong and it ends too, because passing has become impossible. Do not assume a short test means something went wrong.

What the real Idaho test looks like

  • Questions: 40 multiple choice
  • Passing score: 34 correct, or 85%. Six misses allowed.
  • Format: computer adaptive, in person
  • Minimum age: 14 and a half for a Supervised Instruction Permit
  • Source material: the official Idaho Driver's Handbook

Idaho does not run a standalone DMV. Driver licensing goes through county driver's license offices under the Idaho Transportation Department, so the office you visit is a county one even though the rules are statewide.

Fourteen and a half is not a typo either

Idaho issues Supervised Instruction Permits from 14 and a half, one of the earliest starts in the country and an unusually precise age.

Under 17 you must complete an approved driver education course. At 17 or older the course is not required and the permit itself is optional, though you still have to pass the same vision and knowledge tests before the skills test. Applicants under 18 also need a parent or guardian signature and proof of high school attendance or graduation, which catches people out.

Idaho roads have things other states do not

Two hazards here are genuinely unlike anything on an east coast test.

Open range. In designated open range areas, livestock are legally entitled to be on the road. Cattle and sheep are not fenced out, and if you hit one, the liability picture is very different from a state where animals are fenced in. Open range signs are a real warning, not decoration.

Mountain driving. Long grades, switchbacks, chain requirements in winter, and passes that close outright. Engine braking on descents, uphill vehicles having the right of way on narrow mountain roads, and runaway truck ramps all appear in the handbook because they matter here.

One rule nobody expects

An Idaho teen driver license is set to expire five days after the holder's eighteenth birthday. This is deliberate. It forces every young driver back to the office at 18 to convert to an adult license, at which point the graduated restrictions are formally reassessed.

It is not a trap, but people do get caught driving on an expired license because they assumed it ran the usual four or eight years. Put the date in your phone now.

After you pass

The permit is valid for one year. Drivers under 18 must hold it for at least six months before the skills test, and log 50 hours of supervised driving including 10 at night. If the permit expires before you get your license, you take the knowledge test again, so do not let it run out.
