South Dakota lets you apply for an instruction permit at 14, one of the youngest ages in the country. It is also one of the few states where the written test can vanish altogether: pass an approved driver education course within the past year, hand over the certificate, and the knowledge test is waived.
If you are not doing driver’s ed, you are taking the test. It is 25 questions and you need 20 correct, taken at a driver exam station after a vision screening. This free practice test pulls 25 questions at random from our South Dakota bank and explains every answer as you go.
South Dakota Practice Test
What the real South Dakota test looks like
You take it on a computer at a driver exam station, after a vision screening. Twenty-five multiple-choice questions, twenty correct to pass. The material comes from the South Dakota Driver License Manual: road signs, right of way, speed, lane markings, alcohol law, sharing the road and emergencies.
Fail it and you can come back, but not the same day. Bring a certified birth certificate, your social security card, and two pieces of mail showing your address. The mail may be in your parent’s name. A hospital birth certificate will not be accepted, and that single detail sends more people home than anything else.
The driver education shortcut is unusually large here
In most states driver’s ed shaves a little time off the process. In South Dakota it does three things at once. An approved course completed within the past year waives the knowledge test, waives the drive test when you upgrade, and cuts the permit holding period from 275 days to 180.
The 275-day wait
Two hundred and seventy-five days is roughly nine months, and it is among the longest permit holding periods in the country. Combined with a permit age of 14, the design is deliberate: South Dakota lets you start early but makes you serve real time before driving alone.
During that period you log 50 supervised hours, of which 10 must be after dark and 10 in inclement weather. A ticket in the six months before you upgrade resets your eligibility, so the cheapest thing you can do is drive carefully on the permit.
Testing somewhere else?
Rules vary more than most people expect. North Dakota next door runs a different system entirely, Montana caps you at three attempts a year, and New Hampshire has no learner permit at all. Compare every state on our states page, or read the full South Dakota licensing guide.
